In the aftermath of the Battle of the Bulge, the US military was clear of the need for a heavy tank to combat the German big cats. The first twenty M-26 Pershing arrived in the ETO in January, 1945; 320 entered service before the end of the war. Around twenty Pershings saw action in Europe and were reported to have performed well in engagements with Tigers and Panthers.
