Agema Miniatures - Velites

Another company with their first 28mm hard plastic historical troops introduced themselves to wargamers at Salute 2013 with their box of Republican Roman Velites. For less than £10 you get a box of 16 models in two poses. The models are multi-part with separate arms, heads, weapons and parma (shield). There is also an option to equip them with animal skin and this is ambiguous enough to paint it as fox, bear or wolfskin.

First impressions are that the models are crisply detailed and require little preparation. The pose of one right arm, holding and preparing to throw a javelin, is beautiful, with the fingers positioned in exactly the correct way. The poses do, however, limit you a little but with a unit of skirmish troops I don't think this is a big deal. Far better is the fact that you can use these quite happily as later Greek peltasts, or in fact any Mediterranean light troops of the period, by just changing the gladius and javelin for more appropriate versions. Curiously the spears on the shield are longer than the one that you glue on the throwing arm. Very picky, I know!

The above shot of the sprue from Agema's website shows its front and rear aspects. I put just two of these boys together to quickly paint up (Cowboys and another painting project currently have all my spare hobby time at the moment).

After a quick basecoat they had a brown wash - Army Painter strong tone.

The highlighting brought out the detail on the musculature.

A real pleasure to paint! I gave them a super-quick job, but they'd reward more detailed work. If you're doing a Republican army, or any Later Hellenistic or Successor army, then buy 'em.

You can buy a box in the shop - here - or get 'em for as low as £8.40 each in our Three Plastic Box deal: link.
