Despite the success of the D-Day landings, progress had been slow. Despite naval gunfire support and air supremacy the British and Canadians faced stiff opposition around Caen. Lacking heavy armoured support, German infantry dug-in and prepared defensive positions, presenting a formidable obstacle. Whilst a considerable setback, the long battle for Caen had the effect of drawing in significant German forces to the area leaving much lighter opposition in the American sector.
This battle represents forward elements of the Canadian 3rd Division facing initial opposition in the battle for Caen.
The Scenario
The players decided to play the Advance to Contact scenario. Both sides orders are to advance and engage localised enemy in order to probe their strength in key strategic areas. Enemy troops are to be destroyed without risking heavy losses. Artillery and air support are unavailable for this mission and the victory conditions stipulate that a side which loses a third or more of its strength is liable to withdraw. The game will last until one side breaks or each side has 9 turns.
Orders of Battle
Both players decided to play with just one company support choice each. Both the Canadian and German platoons must deploy a Platoon Command and 2 Infantry Squads as a minimum.
